The Mark V diving helmet, an iconic piece of naval history, was manufactured by only four companies throughout its production. Among them, A. Schrader’s Son stood out as the primary supplier to the U.S. Navy during World War II. Their wartime helmets arguably represent the pinnacle of Mark V production.
This particular helmet, manufactured in September 1943, was made at the United States’ height of involvement in World War 2. The presence of a U.S. Navy inspection stamp further confirms its role at the peak of the worldwide conflict.
As the photos show, this helmet is an impressive example in more than complete original condition.
The focal point of this helmet is its original factory-applied tinning. All Mark V’s made for the US Navy had this tinning applied over the copper body to protect against saltwater corrosion. In many cases, this tinning is long gone due to use or aggressive polishing.
The 1943 ID plate with the month, year, and serial number stamped on it is easily readable. The matching serial number is also present on the bonnet communication cup. In addition, the same number can also be found on the underside of all four brass brails, making this helmet a full serial number matching example! The communications cup also has an inspection stamp, proving it was in USN inventory.
As mentioned above, the helmet features the original rich tinning. All the brass hardware is exposed, just as it should be, complementing the tinned body. Absolutely all of the correct hardware is present on this helmet, including the commonly missing four copper brail shims and a complete dumbbell safety latch system. On the inside of the helmet bonnet, air vents are present, as well as a reproducer (speaker). The exhaust chin button is present and functions correctly.
Externally, the helmet is complete with all 12 wing nuts, four copper brail shims, four serial numbered brails, window guards, glass with original red lead calking, air fitting, BTE exhaust valve, spitcock valve, dumbbell safety latch, and communications fitting. The air fitting has a Schrader stamped non-return valve with an end cap. The communications fitting has a brass cap installed as well.
The breastplate neck ring is pushed down into itself on the front half; the back half is not. Please be advised that we will not be separating the bonnet and breastplate for shipping.
If you have been looking for a classic World War 2 Mark V helmet at an amazing price, this is a unique opportunity!
All helmets sold by Nations Attic Inc. will have a certificate of authenticity (COA). This COA will have a serial # on it that will match the # on a tamperproof holographic decal placed on the inside of the helmet. This level of security and long-term assurance of the helmet’s authenticity is unmatched in the industry and very important to us.
The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one at a discounted price is available. The helmet will be shipped in a specially prepared box via FedEx. Worldwide shipping is available.
