A.J. Morse & Son, a Boston company founded in the 1830s, produced some of the most iconic diving helmets, including the US Navy Mark V (1916-mid-1980s). Their diving equipment, renowned for nearly 200 years, established them as a leading name in the field. The company continues operations in Wisconsin.
 
This helmet's serial number is 1210, placing its manufacturer circa 1900. This serial number is present on both the bonnet and breastplate neck rings. The number is also stamped on one of the brails. 
 
As can be seen in the photos, the helmet is in very nice condition. It has been re-tinned, bringing it back to its original factory appearance.  All four brails are present; twelve wing nuts, window guards, glass, internal air vents, front communications fittings, neck ring gasket, and air fitting with Morse Rockland stamped non-return valve are all intact. The bonnet is in excellent condition with no notable dents. The bonnet and breastplate thread together with ease. 
 
Based on our assessment, this helmet was likely restored by Morse when located in Rockland, MA in the last 30 years. The ID plate appears to be a factory replacement, and the brails and other components may also be replacements. The serial number stamps are potentially a result of this restoration. While the helmet is authentic and visually appealing, Nation’s Attic will not issue a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for this example due to the restoration performed on it.
