The US Navy Mark V diving helmet stands as a symbol of underwater exploration. Its enduring design and historical significance make it a prized possession among collectors globally.  The Mark V served the US Navy from 1916 to the mid-1980s, and even after its official retirement, production continued for commercial and recreational use by companies like Morse, DESCO (Diving Equipment and Supply Co), and Schrader.

This particular helmet boasts the original craftsmanship of DESCO, a renowned manufacturer established in the late 1930s in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. DESCO became a supplier to the US Navy in 1942, including for the Mark V helmet.  Today, DESCO remains a leader, crafting top-quality diving helmets and providing repair services.

Dated November 1st, 1944, this helmet is in exceptional original condition. Critical to the historical and collector value of such a helmet is matching serial numbers, which this one has. In addition, it features a US Navy inspection stamp on the ID. This stamp proves the helmet was in USN inventory during WWII.  Another interesting detail for collectors is the tinning that covers the copper body in US Navy Mark V helmets. This original feature protects against saltwater corrosion, giving the helmet its distinct gray finish.  The un-tinned brass hardware, such as the brails and window guards, provides a nice contrast.  Overall, this helmet exemplifies how well a DESCO Mark V can be preserved for over eight decades.

In addition to retaining its original finish, this helmet boasts a collection of original components and special details:

  • Four brails (straps for securing the helmet) Matching serial numbers on the bonnet, breastplate, and identification plate
  • US Navy inspection stamp on the identification plate (verifying its service history)
  • Twelve wing nuts
  • Spitcock valve (used to equalize pressure in the helmet)
  • Exhaust valve
  • Chin button
  • Dumbbell safety latch and related hardware
  • Glass windows
  • Window guards
  • Air and communication elbow fittings
  • Internal air vents
  • Exhaust chin button
  • Neck ring gasket
  • Remnant of original communication wire

The spun copper body is impressive, showcasing a few minor working dents and a single larger dent on the top of the bonnet that doesn't significantly affect the overall look. The bonnet and breastplate thread together correctly. We have noted that the bonnet does require some force to thread on and off from the breastplate fully.

All helmets sold by Nations Attic Inc. will have a certificate of authenticity (COA). This COA will have a serial # on it that will match the # on a tamperproof holographic decal placed on the inside of the helmet. This level of security and long-term assurance of the helmet’s authenticity is unmatched in the industry and very important to us.

The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one at a discounted price is available. The helmet will be shipped in two double thick specially prepared boxes via FedEx. Worldwide shipping is available. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
