Drager Model DM40 Diving Helmet!
Nation's Attic rarely has the opportunity to handle fine helmets made by Germany! This example was made by Drager, who is still in business today. This a model DM40 that was made circa 1966. Both the bonnet and breastplate neck rings have matching serial numbers, 4002.
This classic design, which was used by the German Navy throughout the 20th Century, is an iconic helmet. The 3 bolt pattern with most of the fittings on the back is effective and visually impressive. This model arguably represents the pinnacle of German copper & brass helmet design before the advent of fiberglass models.
The helmet itself is in excellent condition. As can be seen in the photos above, the helmet is complete and free of any notable visual imperfections. Originally Drager would typically coat the inside and outside of their helmets in a heavy white paint. This was done to help prevent saltwater corrosion and also make the diver easier to see underwater. This helmet retains that finish on the inside. The white finish on the outside has been carefully removed long ago. From an eye appeal and collectors perspective, the helmet's full beauty and style can be appreciated much more with the outer white finish removed, in our opinion.
This helmet is a magnificent complete example that represents the peak of German copper & brass helmet design!
