Antique Diving Helmets We purchase antique diving helmets dating to the 1800’s and up into modern fiberglass helmets. The example on the upper left would be one from the 1800’s. As the 20th Century progresses there were many commercial needs for divers. The second example from the left is a great example of an early 1900’s commercial diving helmet. The US Navy would introduce the Mark V in 1916 and would use this helmet until the mid 1980’s, which is the third example above. Lastly, various metal and fiberglass helmets came into use in the 1960’s. The Joe Savoie example at the far right is a good representation. Firefighting Smoke Helmets The other area of expertise we have is in antique fire fighting smoke helmets. These helmets were used to allow a fire fighter access to a building full of smoke and heat. Before there were portable oxygen tanks and masks, fire fighters had to have a helmet hooked to a long air hose. A person outside would pump the air directly to the helmet. These smoke helmets were made in various styles all around the world from the 19th Century well into the 20th Century. Siebe Gorman in England was probably the largest manufacturer of these antique smoke helmets. For more information and details about these vintage smoke helmets please click here. If you have a smoke helmet or you simply are not sure, please call or text us at 316-371-1828 or email helmets@nationsattic.com
